United Sport & Cycle has been a long-time partner of Edmonton’s Sport Central, an organization committed to ensuring that all kids in Edmonton, as well as Central and Northern Alberta, have access to the resources they need to participate in sports. For those looking to make a difference, we have a “penalty box” drop-off bin located at our front entrance, available during business hours, where you can donate sports equipment directly to Sport Central.

A Major Donation from NHL Star Jake DeBrusk

Recently, Sport Central received an incredible boost when Jake DeBrusk, a forward for the Boston Bruins and a local Edmontonian, partnered with Bauer Hockey to donate over $25,000 worth of brand-new hockey gear, including skates, sticks, and helmets. This generous contribution will help Sport Central supply youth in the region with the necessary equipment to play hockey, making it possible for kids who otherwise couldn’t afford it to get involved in the sport.

“We’re incredibly thankful for these donations,” said Sheldon Oleksyn, executive director of Sport Central. “Bauer and Jake DeBrusk have given us enough hockey gear for two years. This kind of support is huge for us.”

Local NHL Stars Support Their Community

Jake DeBrusk is not the only local NHL player supporting Sport Central. Sheldon Oleksyn revealed that there are three NHL players who consistently donate to the cause. Nick Holden of the Vegas Golden Knights and Colton Parayko of the St. Louis Blues are also strong advocates for this local organization.

“These players have a deep loyalty to their community,” said Oleksyn. “They’re from Edmonton, and no matter where they play in the NHL, they remain committed to helping out their hometown.”

The impact of these donations extends beyond the gear itself. Kids are thrilled when they receive brand-new equipment and learn that it has been donated by an NHL star.

“When I tell the kids that the skates or shin pads they’re wearing came from an NHL player, their faces light up. It’s priceless,” Oleksyn added.

The Vital Role of Donations from the Edmonton Community

While donations from NHL players are incredibly important, it’s the Edmonton community that truly powers Sport Central. The organization relies on local residents to donate sports equipment and provide financial support. In light of the ongoing economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sport Central‘s role is more crucial than ever for families in need.

“We are especially concerned this year about families struggling due to the Alberta economy,” said Oleksyn. “Parents who have lost jobs are facing tough decisions when it comes to enrolling their kids in sports. As we move into spring, we expect the demand for help to rise significantly.”

Unfortunately, many people in Edmonton are unaware of organizations like Sport Central, which means that there are still many families who could benefit from the services provided.

“We need to spread the word so we can help more families,” Oleksyn emphasized.

How Can the Community Support Sport Central?

With an influx of donated equipment, Sport Central has more than enough gear to meet the demand. However, Oleksyn is quick to point out that the real need right now is financial support.

“What we need more than anything are cash donations to help cover the cost of sports enrollment fees,” Oleksyn explained. “Parents who are already struggling financially can’t afford the fees, and that’s where Sport Central comes in. Your donations help cover these costs, ensuring kids can still participate in sports.”

Financial contributions can be made directly through the Sport Central website. Donations help kids access sports at an early age and prevent them from falling behind in their development.

“The longer kids wait to start playing sports, the more difficult it becomes for them to catch up and feel confident,” Oleksyn added.

What Items Are Most Needed?

Although Sport Central always appreciates all donations, there are certain items that are in higher demand than others. These include brand-new hockey helmets, bicycle helmets, new or gently used bicycles, hockey skates, and hockey goalie equipment.

United Sport & Cycle has made it easy to contribute. You can drop off your donations at our front entrance during business hours or make a cash donation at our tills. We’ll ensure your generosity reaches those who need it most.
