Winter in Edmonton is a seasoned affair – from shoveling driveways to navigating icy roads, we’re familiar with its challenges. Yet, amidst the snowstorms and frosty winds, there lies a hidden magic waiting to be discovered. Winter, when embraced, offers a unique enchantment. Stepping outside to connect with Mother Nature becomes a key to unlocking the secrets behind this seasonal magic including trying cross country skiing.

As a true Edmontonian, I’ve experienced the beauty of winter from a different perspective. Unlike most kids engrossed in soccer or video games, my childhood was spent gliding across cross country ski trails with my family. My wardrobe featured bright yellow Salomon ski boots, red and black Madshus skis endorsed by Olympic gold-medalist Beckie Scott, and bamboo poles that, despite their quirks, became an integral part of my winter adventures.

While the traditional image of cross country skiing may evoke thoughts of wool socks, metal-strapped boots, and long wooden boards, the sport has undergone a remarkable transformation in the last two decades. In today’s world, it’s about speed, agility, and a challenging workout that engages every muscle – truly a double ski workout!

The popularity of cross country skiing is on the rise, and rightly so. Originating 5000 years ago in Scandinavia, it has evolved into an activity suitable for every family member. The Edmonton Nordic Ski Club provides lessons for all ages, training enthusiasts in Gold Bar Park, with trails spanning through the river valley into Rundle Park and up the iconic Esso Hill into Tiger Goldstick Park. Thanks to new snowmaking machines, skiers can continue training even in minimal snow conditions.

For those seeking trails closer to home, the Victoria Golf Course and Park, Kinsmen Park, William Hawrelak Park, Riverside Golf Course, Hermitage Park, and Millcreek offer groomed trails throughout winter. Retailers like Track ‘N Trail, Fast Trax, and Totem Outfitters provide a diverse selection of skis, boots, and essentials. If you’re unsure about committing to the sport, Totem Outfitters offers rentals. Venture just 30 minutes east of Edmonton to the Strathcona Wilderness Centre for a fully equipped skiing experience.

Cross country skiing is more than a physical activity; it’s a remedy for the body and soul during winter. It goes beyond the pleasure of the great outdoors; it offers the sensation of flight, a rhythmic harmony between breath and pole strikes, and the serene sounds of winter beneath your skis. Even on the toughest days, the craving for that familiar tune persists – a testament to the unique and captivating experience that cross country skiing brings.
