Edmonton has no shortage of places to enjoy a night out. From concerts and comedy clubs to restaurants and live theatre, our city offers plenty of opportunities to escape the everyday routine. But occasionally, you discover an experience that manages to bring several of those things together in a way that feels genuinely special.

That’s exactly what we experienced during a recent evening at Spotlight Cabaret, where we attended the opening run of its newest dinner theatre production, John Wicked of Oz.

And what a night it was.

The food was exceptional, the performances were top-notch, and the laughter seemed almost constant. Add in the larger-than-life personality of owner and performer Jeff Halaby, and you have the ingredients for one of Edmonton’s most entertaining evenings.

There are certainly larger dinner theatre productions in Edmonton, complete with bigger stages, elaborate sets, and considerably larger production budgets. But sometimes the magic of live entertainment has very little to do with how much money is spent on the show.

Sometimes, it’s about how you feel while you’re there.

Judging by the number of enthusiastic regulars in the room, Spotlight Cabaret has clearly figured out how to turn an enjoyable evening into something people want to experience again and again.

A Wickedly Entertaining Twist on Two Familiar Worlds

What happens when you combine the magical world of The Wizard of Oz with the action-packed intensity of John Wick, throw in a little Wicked, and give the entire thing an outrageous musical comedy makeover?

You get John Wicked of Oz.

The latest production at Spotlight Cabaret takes familiar characters and stories and sends them down a decidedly unconventional yellow brick road.

The premise is wonderfully ridiculous. When the Wicked Witch of West Edmonton Mall kills Toto, she makes one very unfortunate decision: she’s crossed a man who has absolutely nothing left to lose.

Enter John Wicked.

Armed with determination, a thirst for revenge, and apparently the ability to dispatch his enemies with an emerald pencil crayon, our unlikely hero heads into a version of Oz unlike anything you’ve seen before.

It’s exactly the kind of delightfully absurd premise that works so well in musical parody theatre.

The production features Ariel Gerard, Sheldon Elter, Kristi Hansen, and Jeff Halaby, under the direction of John Hudson. The show blends musical performances, familiar pop-culture references, comedy, and an entertaining storyline that never takes itself too seriously.

And that’s part of its charm.

You don’t need to be an expert on the original films or Broadway musicals to enjoy the experience. Familiarity with the characters certainly adds another layer to some of the jokes, but the humour, performances, and overall energy make the evening accessible to just about anyone who enjoys a good laugh.

It’s playful, irreverent, and just the right amount of ridiculous.

Jeff Halaby: The Personality Behind the Spotlight Experience

Every great entertainment venue seems to have something that defines its personality. At Spotlight Cabaret, there’s little question that Jeff Halaby plays a significant role in creating that identity.

Throughout our evening, Halaby kept the audience entertained and laughing, adding a sense of warmth and spontaneity that made the experience feel particularly personal.

There’s something refreshing about visiting a venue where the owner isn’t simply a name behind the business. He’s part of the entertainment, engaging with the audience and helping create the atmosphere that makes the place memorable.

His comedic timing and enthusiasm are infectious, and you get the impression that he genuinely enjoys what he’s doing.

That energy carries into the room.

One of the biggest differences between a large theatre production and a smaller venue like Spotlight is the connection between performers and audience members. At Spotlight, you aren’t watching everything unfold from somewhere near the back of a cavernous auditorium.

You’re right there.

You can appreciate the expressions, hear the laughter around you, and feel the energy between the cast and the audience.

Halaby clearly understands how important that connection is, and it helps give Spotlight Cabaret a personality that feels distinctly its own.

Big Entertainment in an Intimate Edmonton Theatre

Located at 8217 104 Street, just off Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona, Spotlight Cabaret occupies a wonderfully distinctive space inspired by the glamour and sophistication of the 1920s.

The interior draws inspiration from the art deco establishments of Old Hollywood and classic New York, with an atmosphere that makes arriving for a show feel like a special occasion.

The venue accommodates approximately 85 guests, creating a surprisingly intimate setting compared with Edmonton’s larger entertainment venues. Its curved stage brings the performances close to the audience, making nearly every seat feel connected to the action.

And while the venue may be smaller, the entertainment certainly doesn’t feel that way.

In fact, we’d argue that Spotlight’s size is one of its greatest advantages.

During our visit, it was obvious that many of the people in attendance were familiar with the venue. There was a wonderful sense of anticipation in the room, the kind you notice when people already know they’re in for a good evening.

You could tell this wasn’t simply another dinner reservation for some of the guests. Coming to Spotlight Cabaret appeared to be something of a tradition.

That says a lot about a business.

Edmonton has several established dinner theatre options, and some offer larger-scale theatrical experiences. There’s absolutely a place for those productions. But Spotlight offers something different: a more personal atmosphere where the performers feel accessible, the audience becomes part of the evening’s energy, and the entire experience feels more like a celebration than a conventional theatre outing.

It’s the sort of place where you can imagine returning with a different group of friends every time a new production opens.

And judging by the regulars enjoying themselves around us, plenty of Edmontonians are already doing exactly that.

Dinner Isn’t an Afterthought — It’s Part of the Show

One of the most impressive aspects of our evening at Spotlight Cabaret was the food.

Let’s face it: when people book a dinner theatre experience, the entertainment is often the main attraction. The meal can sometimes feel like something included simply because it has to be.

That certainly wasn’t our experience at Spotlight.

The food was amazing, and it was clear that the kitchen takes its role in the overall evening seriously.

The John Wicked of Oz dinner theatre experience includes a four-course meal, served throughout the evening to complement the two-act performance.

Guests begin with soup and salad before the first act, followed by their selected main course during intermission. Dessert follows before the second act gets underway.

It’s a thoughtfully paced format that allows you to enjoy both the dining and the entertainment without feeling rushed.

And the menu is considerably more ambitious than you might expect from a small theatre venue.

Some of the themed choices for this production include herb-crusted Alberta AAA sirloin served with garlic mashed potatoes, stuffed chicken cacciatore, miso cod, roasted eggplant and ricotta pasta, and a vegan Emerald City risotto.

Even the desserts get in on the fun, with options such as Somewhere Over the Cannoli and There’s No Place Like Strudel.

The menu also offers vegetarian and vegan choices, with accommodations for dietary restrictions available through the venue.

What stood out to us was how the dining experience complemented the entertainment rather than competing with it.

You settle in, enjoy your first courses, laugh through the opening act, and return to a delicious meal before the fun resumes.

It makes the entire evening feel like a complete experience rather than simply a show with dinner attached.

And for anyone planning an Edmonton date night or a celebration with friends, that’s a pretty compelling combination.

Why Experiences Like This Matter to Edmonton

At YEG Thrive, we’ve always believed that living well involves more than fitness routines, nutrition plans, and healthy habits. It’s also about enjoying the city around us, supporting local businesses, and spending meaningful time with people we care about.

A night at Spotlight Cabaret checks all those boxes.

You’re getting out of the house, enjoying a meal, laughing with friends, and experiencing something creative in person. More importantly, you’re supporting a local venue and the talented performers who help make Edmonton’s arts and entertainment scene so vibrant.

We’ve explored this connection before in our article on why real-life friendships matter more than ever. Shared experiences have a way of strengthening relationships and creating memories that simply can’t be replicated through a screen.

Spotlight Cabaret does this on a smaller, more intimate scale, and that’s precisely what makes it so appealing.

Our Verdict: A Must-Experience Edmonton Night Out

We walked into Spotlight Cabaret expecting an enjoyable night of dinner and entertainment. We left thoroughly impressed by the entire experience.

The food was fantastic, the cast delivered an outstanding performance, and Jeff Halaby kept the audience laughing and engaged throughout the evening.

But perhaps the most memorable part was the atmosphere.

There was something genuinely enjoyable about being surrounded by people who clearly appreciated what this little theatre brings to Edmonton. It wasn’t about having the biggest stage or the most elaborate production. It was about talented people delivering a great show to an audience that couldn’t have been happier to be there.

And that’s something worth celebrating.

Whether you’re planning a date night, celebrating a birthday, entertaining friends visiting Edmonton, or simply looking for something different to do on a weekend, Spotlight Cabaret deserves a place near the top of your list.

Our advice? Gather a few friends, book a table, arrive hungry, and prepare to laugh.

Because sometimes the best entertainment in Edmonton isn’t found on the biggest stage.

It’s found under the spotlight.
